Pest Control in Woodstock and Marriottsville

Woodstock and Marriottsville sit in the northwest corner of Howard County, along the upper Patapsco where Howard, Baltimore and Carroll counties meet. Woodstock grew up around granite quarries and a B&O station in the 1830s, and the old Woodstock College buildings sit across the river. Marriottsville spreads along Marriottsville Road, with the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park nearby and Waverly Woods to the south.

This is the most rural part of the area we cover. Old farmhouses on stone foundations sit near newer homes on big lots, and a lot of properties have a barn, a shed or a detached garage. Pest control in Woodstock and Marriottsville often means the outbuildings as much as the house.

Mice in the barn, then the basement

Mice move out of fields and into barns, sheds and garages as fall comes on, drawn by stored feed, birdseed and grass seed. From there, the house is a short trip. Rodent control that covers the outbuildings works best, with traps or locked bait stations and sealing so the mice don't just move next door. If you keep chickens, horses or other animals, say so when you call so bait placement can be planned around them.

Old farmhouse cellars of stone have the same issues as the historic houses in town: mortar gaps, damp corners and wood sills right on the rock. Our guide to stone foundations covers those.

Wells, septic fields, vegetable gardens and fruit trees all matter on these properties, so say what you have when you call. A tech will plan treatments and bait placement around a wellhead or a garden bed, and a lot of rural jobs lean on trapping and sealing more than anything sprayed. Rats show up out here more than in town, mostly around feed rooms and compost, and they need a different setup than mice. If you're not sure which you have, describe the droppings and any holes by the foundation when you call.

Ticks, carpenter ants and wasps from the woods

Big wooded lots near the park mean deer, and deer mean ticks along every edge. Many families here set up a yard tick treatment for the areas they actually use. Carpenter ants come in from stumps, woodpiles and dead trees, so spring often means tracing the ant trail back to the tree line. Yellow jackets nest in old stumps and rodent holes, and paper wasps hang combs in the eaves of the barn.

Woodstock and Marriottsville border Turf Valley to the south and east, where the houses get newer and closer together, and the woods of the park run all the way down the river to Old Ellicott City.

Questions We Get

Should the barn or shed be treated too?

Usually, yes. Outbuildings are where mice build up before heading for the house. Treating both keeps them from moving back and forth.
